Difference between 35W and 55W ballasts
To make an HID system operate a high-voltage pulse must be transmitted to HID bulb and that’s where the ballasts run the show. An HID ballast creates, drives and sustains the electrical arc in a bulb which builds a light, as a matter of fact. It appears to be a job of work and that’s why the ballast is a complex circuit made up of many components to carry out specific tasks.
We offer an alternative on the market and thus you can choose between 35W and 55W ballasts. In order to help you make the best choice we invite you to read this little press.
Fact is that no electrical device is perfectly efficient and this hasn’t bypassed HID systems. Some power is lost as heat, which is a reason ballasts get warm during operation. We are reaching efficiency levels of nearly 90% what means if you sent 10W to a system it will output 9W. But anyway the pattern is that more power creates more heat. Increasing one watt you get an additional 20 lumens, increasing another watt you’d get only 19 more lumens. This is called diminishing return. And it suggests that 55W ballasts are less efficient though they output more power and brightness.

Another result is that more heat demands more focus on ballasts installation as they get warm and should be mounted on an area with good ventilation. Besides factory wiring is usually designed to provide 16-55 watts, much power draw can damage factory wiring. A relay harness may help to avoid overloading of the electric system. It allows HID bulbs and ballasts operate independently of the vehicle’s original wiring system and can provide a power source that is more consistent.
55W ballasts should be used with 55W bulbs only since by increasing the intensity of arc, you are just “running them hotter”, which will wear down your 35W bulbs much faster.
In sum, more power means a more intense arc of light, and more brightness. However, it adds a number of aspects to it.
Luminescence efficiency: >85%
Operating power consumption: 4.2A
